Mark Kenna’s journey with Oesophageal Cancer began on his 49th birthday in January 2012, when he was officially diagnosed. The symptoms had started earlier, in October 2011, when Mark began experiencing chronic heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and severe reflux. Over the course of the year, he also noticed significant weight loss, shedding almost two stone in just 12 months. Initially, he suspected he might have an ulcer, as the symptoms seemed similar.
In February 2012, Mark began chemotherapy to shrink the tumour in preparation for surgery. By July of the same year, he underwent an Oesophagectomy, a complex procedure performed by Professor John Reynolds and Mr. Ravi at St. James’ Hospital. After the surgery, Mark spent two weeks recovering in the hospital before returning home to continue his recovery.
In September 2012, Mark resumed chemotherapy, continuing the treatment until November 2012. As of now, 13 years have passed since Mark’s diagnosis, marking a testament to his strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
